2026-08-18 –, 2 - Ending Electronic Empires + Disability Awareness Days (Enthinderungstage) Fr. - Su.
This workshop will be dedicated to sharing skills, ideas and experiences. We will focus on how activists can use digital security tools to keep information safe and organise effectively without putting themselves or others at risk. The workshop will be delivered in English (hopefully with a whisper translation to German). No technical knowledge is required to participate.
We will start by doing some 'threat modelling' exercises together. This will involve coming up with potential threats that face activists as a large group. We will then break off into smaller groups and discuss these potential risks and how we can work together to prevent them. By thinking about how our decisions affect our fellow activists, we can care for each other and keep each other safe.
The second half of the workshop will focus more on practical advice. As a large group, we will discuss the pros and cons of different instant messaging platforms, browsers, file sharing platforms, video call platforms, email providers and operating systems. Hopefully, people will leave feeling empowered to take steps to improve their own information security practices.
I am called Sam, and I will be facilitating the workshop. I am an information security PhD student from the UK, working on a project called Social Foundations of Cryptography (https://social-foundations-of-cryptography.gitlab.io/). My research is focused on designing digital security tools which can help activists stay safe and maintain anonymity while organising together. If you are interested in taking part in the project, please feel free to speak to me after the workshop :)
This workshop will be similar to the workshop I gave at last years System Change Camp (titled Digital security for activists). Like last year, I am to create a space for people to come together and share their skills regarding information security. The workshop will start with a threat modelling exercise designed to help people think about how their information security practices influence other people around them. The second half will focus on practical advice.
