Saatgut, Macht&Märkte:Warum die Deregulierung der Neuen Gentechnik uns alle betrifft // Seeds, Power&Markets: The deregulation of New Genetic Engineering affects us all
2026-08-18 , 15 - Landwirtschafts- und Ernährungszelt / Agriculture and Food Tent

The EU has recently decided to deregulate New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). What does this mean for farmers, plant breeding, seeds, and biodiversity?
The debate on NGTs cannot be separated from the broader challenges facing agriculture. Climate change is already transforming agricultural production through more frequent droughts, extreme rainfall, emerging pests, and increasing crop failures. These pressures will intensify as global warming continues.
The EU's decisions risk undermining precisely those alternatives that are essential for building resilient agricultural systems. Expanding patents and further increasing market concentration in the seed sector could limit the scope for public plant breeding, small and medium-sized breeding companies, and participatory and agroecological breeding initiatives. Yet this diversity of breeding approaches and farming systems is crucial for developing resilient agriculture capable of adapting to an increasingly unpredictable climate.

Please describe your contribution briefly and clearly (4–6 sentences, max. 500 characters). This description will be visible on the printed program cards on the camp. Please specify the topic and method as concretely as possible, meaning what your contribution is about and how you will work on it. This description will be publicly visible and gives participants a quick overview.:

What does this mean for farmers, breeding, seeds, and biodiversity? The debate over NGT must not be viewed in isolation from the fundamental challenges facing agriculture. Climate change is already fundamentally altering production conditions: Droughts, heavy rainfall, new pests, and crop failures are on the rise and will continue to worsen as global warming progresses.
Decisions at the EU level threaten to hinder the development of precisely those alternatives that are particularly important for a resilient agricultural sector.
