Wenn es um die Klimakrise geht, sprechen wir häufig von Konzernen, die Kohle, Öl und Gas fördern und verbrennen. Eine Industrie, die häufig viel zu wenig betrachtet wird, die aber in jedes fossile Projekt involviert ist, ist die Finanzindustrie. Jedes fossile Projekt und Unternehmen braucht eine Finanzierung, die sie häufig von Banken als Kredite oder als Anleihen bekommen und sie brauchen Versicherungen. Banken und Versicherungen haben so mit die einen riesigen Hebel um die fossile Industrie zu stoppen.
Die NGO urgewald arbeitet seit über 30 Jahren zu dem Zusammenhang von Klimakrise und dem Finanzsektor. In dem Workshop stellen wir die Arbeit von urgewald vor und erklären warum Banken und Versicherungen ein gutes Ziel für zukünftige Aktionen und Kampagnen sind. Der Workshop richtet sich an alle Level von Vorwissen und möchte insbesondere Menschen abholen, die sich noch nicht viel mit dem Thema beschäftigt haben.

Climate crisis and finance – how banks and insurance companies are destroying the climate and what we can do about it

When it comes to the climate crisis, we often talk about corporations that extract and burn coal, oil, and gas. One industry that is often overlooked is the financial industry. Every fossil fuel project and company needs financing, which they often obtain from banks in the form of loans or bonds, and they need insurance. Banks and insurance companies thus have enormous leverage to stop the fossil fuel industry.
The NGO urgewald has been working for over 30 years on the connection between the climate crisis and the financial sector. In this workshop, we will present the work of urgewald and explain why banks and insurance companies are a good target for future actions and campaigns. The workshop is aimed at all levels of prior knowledge and is particularly intended for people who have not yet dealt with the topic in depth.
