Journalist and author Dr Tom Doig has been researching a nonfiction book on prepping, climate activism and potential societal collapse - working title We Are All Preppers Now - since late 2019. Tom has interviewed over 50 people across Aotearoa (New Zealand), Australia, Sweden, the US, the UK, Ireland and Indonesia.
Tom is keen to meet with a range of INTERNATIONAL participants of Kollapscamp for a freewheeling cross-cultural conversation (mainly in English), exploring how people's "common sense" approaches to disaster preparation and societal decline / collapse might be influenced by pre-existing, perhaps unconscious, cultural norms.
For example, based on Tom's travels and interviews, prepping in Anglosphere nations (the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand) is often individualistic, and sometimes driven by deep lack of faith in government, and "the system" more generally, even in well-functioning states. By contrast, prepping in Indonesia is much more collectivist; and where there is distrust in the government's ability (or willingness) to support its citizens in times of crisis, this is based on tangible experiences of government neglect.
