Divestment bezeichnet nichts weiter als das Gegenteil von Investment. Geld wird also nicht in einem Bereich angelegt, sondern es wird ihm entzogen. So lassen sich selbst große Konzerne in Finanzierungsnot bringen. Das Ziel von Divestment-Kampagnen ist es, den wirtschaftlichen und politischen Einfluss bestimmter Akteur*innen zu schwächen. Im Workshop gehen wir zuerst auf die historischen Ursprünge von Divestment-Kampagnen im Zuge des Protests gegen das südafrikanische Apartheidsystem ein. Dann schauen wir auf gegenwärtige klimapolitische Divestment-Kampagnen, welche Finanzinstitutionen zum Abzug von Geldern aus Kohle-, Öl- und Gaskonzernen auffordern. Schließlich wollen wir gemeinsam überlegen, wo und wie wir Divestment-Strategien in unseren unterschiedlichen aktivistischen Kontexten zukünftig nutzen könnten.

Divestment is nothing more than the opposite of investment. Money is not invested in an area, but withdrawn from it. In this way, even large corporations can find themselves in financial difficulties. The aim of divestment campaigns is to weaken the economic and political influence of certain actors. In the workshop, we will first look at the historical origins of divestment campaigns in the course of the protests against the South African apartheid system. Then we will look at current climate policy divestment campaigns, which call on financial institutions to withdraw funds from coal, oil and gas companies. Finally, we will consider together where and how we could utilise divestment strategies in our different activist contexts in the future.
