The flow of cobalt between Morocco and Europe is a small but critical trade. The majority of the worlds cobalt comes from the DRC, and is the site of tremendous human rights voilations and slavery-like labour conditions. In recent years, some European actors - like Renault and BMW - have turned their attention towards Morocco, signing deals to procure cobalt from the single cobalt mine in Morocco. This trade at the same time avoids impliciation in DRC cobalt mining and secures a supply of cobaly for european companies in the face of chinese competition. However, while marketed as responsible and sustainable cobalt, the mining of cobalt in Morocco still entails ecological degredation and unsafe, exploitative labour conditions. This presentation maps out the flow of cobalt between Morocco and Europe and highlights the link between "green" industries in the global north and extractive industries in the global south.
