Climate justice in DR Congo- Ressource war and oil auction
2025-08-19 , C4C 2 English

We‘re international activists from the climate justice collective „Congo Basin Alliance“. We, this are activists from the DR Congo and from European countries like Germany or Suisse.

Together we‘re working for more international solidarity and improved relations between global south and global north climate justice groups. And want to raise awareness for the often ignored consequences of exploitation and of the climate crisis in countries like the DRC.

The Congo Basin with one of the largest tropical rainforests and its further ressources is crucial for the solving the climate crisis. But today the population doesn‘t benefit at all of it. And suffers under ressource wars, pollution and the climate crisis.

Currently, there‘s happening a ressource war in the east of the DRC; funded also by the exploitation of minerals which are used for the modern electronics like smartphones. Some activists of our group were forced to leave their homes, too.

Also an oil auction that threatens the world largest peatlands as one of the most important natural CO2 storages has been restarted this years. It was temporarily stopped after year-long peaceful resistance by local people and international organisations.
Another risk is the planned EACOP oil pipeline.
So far, the DRC already suffers by the oil pollution of the European oil company Perenco.

In our workshop, mainly activists from DRC will tell from their climate justice activism in the DRC and how they engage for a just transition and a better future under these difficult conditions. They emphasize the importance of indigenous environmental protection.
Together we can think about how other people and groups can support their important claims and show a decolonial solidarity.

We‘re looking forward to an enriching workshop.
