Seit Jahren versuchen Aktivist*innen, Vergesellschaftung und sozial-ökologische Konversion als Transformationsperspektive für die Automobilindustrie ins Spiel zu bringen. Nun droht die massive Aufrüstung, diese Bestrebungen umzukehren - strauchelde Werke werden von Rheinmetall und Co. umworben. Der Standort Osnabrück ist dafür ein gutes Beispiel: Dort ist offen, was ab 2027 am Standort passiert. Ein guter Moment also, als Verkehrswendebewegung darüber ins Gespräch zu kommen, wie in Osnabrück zukünftig Bahnen statt Rüstungsgüter produziert werden können.

Die Automobilproduktion am Standort Osnabrück mit derzeit 2.300 Beschäftigten ist nur bis 2027 gesichert. In den vergangenen Monaten war immer wieder im Gespräch, das Werk anschließend für die Produktion von Rüstungsgütern zu verwenden – vor allem Rheinmetall ist offenbar interessiert an den dortigen Produktionsmöglichkeiten. Während Volkswagen – wie die deutsche Automobilindustrie insgesamt – in einer schweren wirtschaftlichen Krise steckt, verzeichnet Rheinmetall bei seinen Aufträgen Zuwächse in Rekordhöhe. Die Übernahme von bestehenden industriellen Produktionsstandorten sowie Fachkräften wäre für den Waffenhersteller eine einfache Möglichkeit, seine Produktion zügig auszuweiten. Grund für den Boom bei Rheinmetall sind stark gestiegene Investitionen in Militär und Rüstung in Deutschland. Zu deren Finanzierung hatte der Bundestag zunächst ein 100 Milliarden Euro-Sondervermögen und am 18. März 2025 die Lockerung der Schuldenbremse beschlossen.

ROBIN WOOD-Aktivist*innen haben bereits im Frühjahr am VW-Werk in Osnabrück für einen sozial-ökologischen Umbau der Automobilindustrie protestiert. Mit einer Kletteraktion forderten sie: ÖPNV statt Panzer – Jobs nicht auf Krieg aufbauen! Ein nächster Schritt ist es nun, mit den Beschäftigten in den Austausch zu treten und gleichzeitig innerhalb der Mobilitätswendebewegung darüber ins Gespräch zu kommen, wie wir auch von außen Druck ausüben können, um der zunehmenden Militarisierung etwas entgegen zu setzen und klar zu machen: Es gibt Alternativen zur Rüstungsproduktion.

For years, activists have been trying to bring socialization and socio-ecological conversion into play as a transformation perspective for the automotive industry. Now, massive rearmament threatens to reverse these efforts—struggling factories are being courted by Rheinmetall and Co. The Osnabrück site is a good example of this: it is unclear what will happen there from 2027 onwards. So now is a good time for the transport transition movement to start talking about how trains can be produced in Osnabrück instead of armaments in the future.

Automobile production at the Osnabrück site, which currently employs 2,300 people, is only guaranteed until 2027. In recent months, there has been repeated talk of using the plant for the production of armaments afterwards – Rheinmetall in particular is apparently interested in the production possibilities there. While Volkswagen – like the German automotive industry as a whole – is in a serious economic crisis, Rheinmetall is recording record growth in orders. The takeover of existing industrial production sites and skilled workers would be an easy way for the arms manufacturer to rapidly expand its production. The reason for the boom at Rheinmetall is the sharp increase in investment in the military and armaments in Germany. To finance this, the Bundestag initially approved a special fund of €100 billion and, on March 18, 2025, decided to relax the debt brake.

ROBIN WOOD activists protested for a socio-ecological restructuring of the automotive industry at the VW plant in Osnabrück back in the spring. With a climbing action, they demanded: Public transport instead of tanks – don't build jobs on war! The next step is now to engage in dialogue with the employees and, at the same time, to discuss within the mobility transition movement how we can also exert pressure from outside to counteract the increasing militarization and make it clear that there are alternatives to arms production.
