In this workshop I show you how to make biochar through pyrolysis with garden residues in an affordable and simple way. We use a metal barrel, known as a ‘top-lit updraft reactor’, and wood chips.
Biochar has been used for thousands of years in a wide variety of fields, including agriculture, medicine and hygiene. Today, it plays an increasingly important role in the permanent sequestration of CO₂.
Biochar can be enriched with nutrients from compost or urine and then incorporated into the soil as a slow-release fertiliser, increasing soil fertility, drought resistance and soil health. It also be used for composting toilets. In case of collapse, you could also use the biochar for water filtration.
Biochar is produced through pyrolysis, meaning the heating of organic materials with limited oxygen supply. In the fire barrel, a clean, smoke-free pyrolysis is achieved by igniting wood chips and extinguishing them at the optimum moment, which you will learn in this workshop.
